What does the Defence School Mentor (DSM) role offer?
The program that is offered aims to support children and ADF families during transition in and out of school due to posting, deployment or parental absences and during the child’s time at the school. The role is funded by the Department of Defence through the Defence Community Organisation.
Who is the Grand Avenue State School DSM?
Tamara Turner is the DSM at Grand Avenue SS, starting this
role in June 2018. Tamara is the wife of
a career Air Force serviceman, together they have three children that attend
Grand Avenue. Tamara has a great
understanding and appreciation of the unique lifestyle and pressures that
defence families face.
What support is available at Grand Avenue State School?
Tamara offer’s support to the
children in a variety of ways. This includes Defence Club during break;
individualised support leading up to and during deployment (eg craft for
parent, care packages, acknowledging significant events); welcoming and
familiarisation activities; fare welling activities leading up to postings; in
class support both in groups and individually and playground support.
Tamara assists the school in the organization of special
services to commemorate ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.
